April 2007 - Tetrycyline stained
teeth treated with porcelain veneers
This gentleman has severe staining of his teeth, caused by tetracycline.
Tetracycline is an antibiotic that has a strong affinity for calcium.
If doctors prescribe this drug to children during the formation of the permanent
teeth, the tetracycline binds to the calcium in the forming tooth, resulting
in irreversible staining.
He had veneers fitted to the upper teeth several years ago, which were starting
to show their age. His request was for the improvement of the appearance
of the lower teeth.
8 Veneers were fitted on his lower front teeth, and he is very pleased with
the result. These veneers have now been in function for more than two years
without any problems. The ageing upper veneers will be replaced next.
