July 2007 - failing teeth saved
with a combination of gum treatment, implants, orthodontics, crowns, and
a precision denture
This lady in her early fifties suffered from adult periodontitis which
caused her gums to recede, leaving unsightly gaps between her teeth. She
had lost some of her upper back teeth, and wanted the crowding of her
lower front teeth corrected.
The first phase of her treatment was to treat the gum disease. One of
her lower front teeth was removed, and the other three repositioned with
a brace to correct the crowding.
Two implants were then placed in her lower jaw, to replace the missing
molar teeth. Since she wasn’t prepared to have bone grafts to the
sinuses, it was decided to replace the missing upper back teeth with a
precision denture. Her remaining upper teeth were prepared, and a temporary
bridge fitted.
The temporary bridge was in place for six months while the orthodontic
and gum treatments were completed. The final bridges were then cemented,
and the precision-denture attached to them.
